Household Economy Tips That Can Help Us All
The powers that be tell us that we are not now technically in a recession, and they also maintain the position that inflation is "low." The inflation rate in April 2008 was at 3.78%. Of course, when "they" determine what the inflation rate is, "they" toss out increases in prices for gasoline and groceries ? too volatile, "they" say. "They" obviously haven't been to the grocery store lately, filled their car's gas tank, or bought a pair of shoes for a kid who seems to grow overnight.
Prices are high for the everyday goods that we all buy. Prices are getting higher, and if there is a ceiling, nobody seems to know where it is. So we, as working family people, do what we have always done. We economize, and we hope that the powers that be get a grip soon.
Simple steps like turning out lights and turning off electronics when you leave a room can help. Keeping the thermostat at 68? in the winter and 74? (or higher) in the summer will help, as well.
Lumping errands together will save gasoline, and so will sharing rides with friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Use public transportation where it is available.
Buy nonperishable home products in bulk. Nonperishable products can live on the shelves in your pantry as well as they can live on the shelves of your local grocery store?and after you buy them, the grocery store can't raise the price ? again.
In all things, follow the principle "Waste not, want not"! Don't throw usable items away. Make another meal out of leftovers. Repair rather than replace.
Make your home as energy efficient as you possibly can. The more energy efficient it is, the lower your heating and cooling bills will be. Install aerators on your faucets if you don't already have them.
Make cutting corners a family adventure. Kids like to be challenged. Get the whole family involved in cutting the cost of everyday living.
